Youth Investments in Football

Youth Investments: In general, a well-run and successful youth academy can generate a significant return on investment for a club. The academy can provide a steady stream of young, talented players who can be promoted to the first team, sold to other clubs for a profit, or loaned out to gain experience. Additionally, a successful academy can also help to create a sense of identity and continuity within the club, which can be valuable in terms of fan engagement and building a loyal fanbase.

There are several metrics that can be used to evaluate the success of a youth academy of a football club, some of them are:

  • Number of players promoted to the first team: This metric measures the number of players who have progressed from the youth academy to the first team. It indicates the effectiveness of the academy in developing players who can make an impact at the senior level.
  • Percentage of first team minutes played by academy graduates: This metric measures the proportion of minutes played by players who have come through the club’s academy. It indicates the extent to which academy graduates are contributing to the team’s performance on the field.
  • Transfer fees generated by academy graduates: This metric measures the revenue generated by the sale or loan of academy graduates to other clubs. It indicates the financial success of the academy in monetizing the talent it has developed.
  • International representation: This metric measures the number of players who have played for their national teams at different levels. It indicates the level of talent the academy is producing and its reputation in the international football scene.
  • Reputation: This metric measures the reputation of the academy within the football industry. It indicates how other clubs, coaches and experts perceive the academy, and how well it is respected and recognized within the industry
  • Graduation rate: This metric measures the percentage of players that progress from the academy to the first team or professional football. It indicates the overall success of the academy in developing players that can play at a professional level.

The success of a youth academy should be evaluated based on the club’s specific goals and objectives, and not only on the basis of the metrics. Some clubs that have been traditionally known for having successful youth academies include:

  • Ajax Amsterdam: The club has a long history of producing talented players from its youth academy, including the likes of Johan Cruyff, Marco van Basten, Frank Rijkaard, and Edwin van der Sar, and more recently, Frenkie de Jong, Matthijs de Ligt, and Donny van de Beek.
  • Barcelona: Known as La Masia, it has produced a number of world-class players such as Lionel Messi, Andres Iniesta, Xavi Hernandez, Sergio Busquets, and Gerard Pique.
  • Sporting CP: Sporting CP academy is known as “Alcochete” and it has produced a number of talented players such as Cristiano Ronaldo, Luis Figo, Nani, and Ricardo Quaresma.
